DEEB OUT OF WPT
Freddy Deeb was out of the WPT on day two at the Bellagio. Mosseri spent nearly the entirety of Day 2 of the WPT Championship as runaway chip leader. He vaulted to the top of the counts early when his two pair filled up on the river to double through Saul, who flopped a straight that hand. The 400,000 chip pot left Saul with just 32,000 and he busted to Mosseri a short while later. Mosseri continued to chip up and ended the day on top with 685,200 chips.
The pack closed in on Mosseri as play wrapped up with Bay 101 winner Alan Sternberg finishing second in chips with 606,400 and Steven Kelly rounding out the top three with 566,500. There were 116 players who made it thru to the end of Day 2. There were 170 that started the day, but there were also 32 additions to the field, including last year’s champ, David Williams, as late registration saw the field swell in size to 220 players. That field size generated a prize pool of $5,309,500. The top 27 players will finish in the money and first place will take home $1,618,344. Second place will also earn seven-figures, taking home $1,061,900.
While Mosseri, Sternberg, and others thrived, many others saw their run in the Championship event come to a close. The Day 2 bustouts included John Juanda, Freddy Deeb, Erick Lindgren, Hoyt Corkins, Dan Cates, Mike Matusow, Justin Bonomo, Scotty Nguyen, and Vivek Rajkumar. With Rajkumar’s elimination, one of Frankenberger’s biggest threats in the WPT Player of the Year race is out of the picture, but there are still plenty of players, including Sternberg and Kelly, who could pass Frankenberger with a fourth and third place finish respectively.
